LearningDifferences.Info® Version 4.0: More Data, Better Tools, and a Vision Beyond Texas

Since launching LearningDifferences.Info®, our mission has remained unchanged: to help families make more informed decisions about special education services offered by public schools.

Over the past year, parents, educators, and advocates have shared valuable feedback about the platform. Several themes emerged repeatedly. Families wanted the ability to compare schools side-by-side, understand how campuses evolve over time, and gain deeper insights into how schools support students receiving special education services.

Those suggestions helped shape the next phase of the platform.

We are excited to introduce Version 4.0 of LearningDifferences.Info®, our most significant update to date.

Highlights of Version 4.0

School Comparison Tool

One of the most requested features has been the ability to compare multiple schools using special education metrics.

Version 4.0 introduces a new comparison tool that allows families to evaluate two or more schools side-by-side across numerous indicators, including enrollment, inclusion practices, staffing, academic outcomes, discipline, and other special education measures.

Families considering a move, comparing neighborhood schools, or exploring transfer opportunities can now make more informed decisions using objective data.

Historical Data and Trends

A single year’s data provides only a snapshot.

Version 4.0 now includes three years of historical information for every school in our database, enabling families to identify trends and observe how schools have changed over time.

Historical information can help distinguish temporary fluctuations from sustained progress and may reveal insights that are not apparent from a single year’s performance. For example, families can now observe whether improvements in inclusion, staffing, or student outcomes are part of a sustained trend or simply reflect a single year’s variation.

Expanded Coverage

To keep the database current and comprehensive, we have added more than 1,000 newly opened campuses.

LearningDifferences.Info® now provides information on nearly every public school campus in Texas, including recently opened schools that were not previously available on the platform.

Enhanced SPED Support Score

Version 4.0 incorporates an enhanced SPED Support Score methodology.

The updated methodology incorporates additional indicators, refined weighting factors, and insights gained from several years of analyzing publicly available Texas education data.

Version 4.0 places greater emphasis on measures that may better reflect a school’s ability to support students receiving special education services, including staffing characteristics, participation and inclusion practices, academic outcomes, discipline patterns, and year-over-year consistency.

Percentiles are now calculated within each school’s peer group — Elementary/Primary, Middle, High, or All-Grade campuses — so schools are only compared to others serving similar grade levels, rather than against every ranked school statewide.

While no single score can capture every aspect of a student’s experience, we believe the enhanced methodology provides families with a more balanced and meaningful assessment of special education supports available at each campus.

Keeping LearningDifferences.Info® Accessible

Since its inception, LearningDifferences.Info® has been offered as a free resource for families.

We remain committed to ensuring that the most recent school-year data for every Texas public school will continue to be freely accessible to all users.

At the same time, maintaining and expanding a statewide database, developing new tools, and improving the platform require ongoing investment.

To support these efforts and ensure the long-term sustainability of the platform, some advanced features—including the school comparison tool, access to historical data, and other analytical capabilities—are now available through an annual subscription.

We believe this approach strikes an appropriate balance between keeping essential information freely available and generating the resources necessary to maintain, improve, and responsibly expand the platform over time.

Building for the Future

Version 4.0 also includes a complete redesign of the website’s backend and frontend architecture.

These improvements were made with scalability in mind and provide a foundation for expanding LearningDifferences.Info® beyond Texas in the future.

To support the long-term sustainability and growth of the platform, LearningDifferences.Info® is now organized as a limited liability company (LLC).

While Texas remains our immediate focus, the challenges faced by families navigating special education are not unique to Texas. We hope the work being done today will eventually benefit families in other states as well.

LearningDifferences.Info® remains an independent initiative and is not affiliated with any school district, government agency, or advocacy organization.

Thank You

LearningDifferences.Info® would not exist without the encouragement, suggestions, and support of families who use the platform.

Every email, recommendation, and constructive comment has helped shape Version 4.0.

We look forward to continuing this journey, supporting more families throughout Texas, and ultimately making transparent special education information accessible to families across the country.

Thank you for being part of that journey.
